Gearing up for Freedomworks.org BlogCon
Thursday I fly out to this blessed Nations capital to attend FreedomWorks BlogCon. I am getting geared up. It is going to be the 4th time I have been brought to the Nations Capital here in only a few years. This time, it is very special for me. I have traveled this nation since July 27, 2007 mostly representing other bloggers. It was an honor and a privilege, but this time, I only represent myself and my own effort. It is quite the change for me. I am actually really looking forward to it.
In past sojourns, I focused on recruiting more bloggers and lifting up those bloggers who already were writing for Grizzly Groundswell to provide them with more contacts and opportunities. I was very good at this. Some of Grizzly Groundswell alumni are now reaching the positions that they were trying to reach while working with me.
Stephen Kruiser is headlining this event and it has been humbling to watch him find his rightful place in the forefront of Conservative online activism.
Emery McClendon will be speaking to the 9/12 event in St. Louis and should soon be one of the most demanded speaker at events all across this nation.
Gary Fouse is still tearing up the threat of Islamic radicals and is a vital voice waking America up to this war in our homefront.
These are just a few of the GrizzlyGroundswell.com alumni, as almost all of them are finding their voice amplified and establishing themselves in this online fight for our country. It has been a real pleasure and humbling to think how far we have come.
It often seems that online today each season is a year for me. Four years seems to pass by when in reality it is only one. I am very satisfied with what we have accomplished, yet, encouraged that I no longer have to bear the burden of promoting for others. It has been a liberating metamorphosis.
It is amazing the time I now have that I am not hand holding new recruits and improving their savvy online today. It occurred to me one day as it seemed that “being let down” was the only assistance I was getting with one or more of the new paths I was pioneering this last Winter. There always appeared to be more and more distractions and what I fear to call sabotage, then productive movement to obtain the goals I set forth. That is always the threat of a larger organization. There were too many moving parts all moving in the wrong directions. Thus, the drastic move of Temerity had to be taken and for this, it has made all the difference.
In returning to the basics without the all the chaos, I have relaunched 61 blogs that most were launched when I attempted to populate with authors back in 2007 when I made the move from WordPress.org blogs to a WPMU setup. Now they are all back on GrizzlyTemerity.com hosted WordPress.org blogs. It is really amazing to see each of these blogs take on a new life and find some traction with readers in the chaos that is the cybersphere today. Here are some quick stats and numbers since April-August, 2010, even though over 30 of these blogs were just launched in August:
~ 61 blogs
2010 blog stats April-August 2010:
~ 208,832 unique visitors
~ 1,627,089 unique page views
~ 7.79 page views/visit average
~ 496,326 RSS feed readers
Recently I have been flexing the strength of the- 125×125 click-able ads on the right sidebar of the blogs to promote Robert P. Murphy’s Principle of Economics online course. For the first dry run, I am very encouraged by the numbers.
These numbers are from a short but effective run, August 22nd-September 5th, 2010. The ad runs through Sept. 11th.
Impressions: 161,654
click through: 1,984
I also ran a few Twitter Tweets and Robert P. Murphy wrote some great blog articles to promote his class that I posted on a number of the blogs that gave us an additional reach that is not reflected here in the numbers.
Theodore Media is quickly becoming the Media empire I had envisioned and work day and night to obtain.
I am currently in phase one of the Grizzly Reformation started back in April of this year.
Phase 1 of Grizzly Reformation: Almost Completed
This phase is almost completed. It consists of a return to basics launching a fleet of blogs all geared to niche markets yet still maintaining the Conservative political core that reflects Theodore Media’s mission. The Key to accomplishing this phase will be in establishing a monetization cash flow from the advertising opportunities that this phase offers my fellow Conservative Candidates, organizations and businesses. Without accomplishing a cash flow, phases 2-3 may be pushed off indefinitely.
Phase 2 of Grizzly Reformation:
This phase will focus on increasing the reach and advertising opportunities for Theodore Media’s advertisers. It will rely heavily on the relaunch of TemerityMagazine.com as well as launching additional online magazines that are now in the works. With Phase 1 establishing a cash flow, I will be toying with bringing independent contractors on board at this time to help keep up with the growing Theodore Media empire.
Before I relied upon user created content to populate my sites but found it was wonderful when it worked well, but prone to infiltration and sabotage. It allowed me to grow fast and furious and provide content, but honestly, it was also a Pandora’s box once set into motion. I found myself spending way to much time and effort, instead of spending that time with those that really had our interdependent motivations at heart.
Thus, the rekindling of the Temerity Magazine and launching additional magazines that I can bring in independent contractors will really shift Theodore Media into that next gear and provide some exciting advertising opportunities for our readership and customer base. The first independent Contractor I bring on board will be an advertising sales manager. I am excited to realize this position as it will provide for that special someone’s family and assist me in accomplishing my goals.
Online Magazine numbers as of Sept. 1st, 2010~ 68,661 unique readers
~ 834,921unique page views
Phase 3 of Grizzly Reformation:
This phase will relaunch WGGRN.com online radio stations, self hosted and marketed to niche markets in the marketplace. I really miss my online radio show and running the WGGRN.com radio station. It was a profitable excercise even though the overhead was substantial. I now know ways of bringing a fleet of stations online for a fraction of the cost of the original overhead. Yet, I am dragging my feet on relaunching because I need to develop in Phase 1 an advertising customer base to take advantage of the advertising opportunities and positive cashflow this venture.
In my original business plan I relied upon the sale of the product to the individual radio show host to monetize the effort. Gifting the host with a very affordable way to monetize their effort. Unfortunately, I found that the hosts I attracted were not interested in doing the needed leg work and they dropped off along the way. The interface technology was horrid as well, so it was not only the fault of the hosts, but instead my fault for thinking my hosts could handle the step back in technology interface in order to run their shows.
I was very disappointed with our service provider and the online radio service providers industry as a whole. They all seemed to be sitting on their little niche in the market place with no vision to improve their product. Without some serious cash flow, I will not be willing to remedy this need as I can provide quality programming without need of it.
However, if my fellow Conservatives buy into the advertising opportunities Theodore Media provides, I would be able to invest in the needed upgrades and really grab the lion share of the booming online radio marketplace. Until then, I will be launching my stations after phase 1 and 2 are securely churning out great products.
Theodore Media
Theodore Media was founded and created to provide a platform for our Conservative political candidates, organizations, activists and businesses to have a foothold in the media today. Being a grassroots activist and entrepreneur I have built this effort from the ground up, while financing its growth from my family table. It has taken over 3 years but I am finally realizing the monetization potential of my efforts. I pray you can discern the potential of promoting your effort on Theodore Media.

An Introduction to Libertarianism by Robert P. Murphy
An Introduction to Libertarianism
Chad Everson is helping me promote my online Mises Academy class on Principles of Economics (which starts September 8!). He asked me to explain how libertarianism fits into the conventional Republican/Democratic political establishment in the United States, because it often seems as if libertarians straddle the fence. This is a common reaction when people begin encountering libertarian positions on hot-button issues. What I want to argue is that it is the libertarian who offers a consistent worldview, whereas the typical conservative/liberal or right-winger/left-winger or Republican/Democrat (though we can all see there is hardly any difference in this last “spectrum”) often uses arguments that conflict with each other.
Before diving in, let me give the disclaimer that I obviously can’t speak for all self-described libertarians, since they don’t all agree on every issue. There is also the difference between “big-L” Libertarians who are part of an actual third political party, versus “small-l” libertarians who embrace it as a philosophy but don’t focus on the ballot box as the means of achieving freedom.
Libertarians value liberty as the highest political goal, and view it as an end in itself. They think that people should have the legal right to do whatever they want with their own private property, so long as their actions don’t interfere with the ability of other people to use their property.
A common way of summarizing the libertarian position (in the context of American politics) is to say a libertarian is “conservative on economic issues but liberal on social issues.” This is because the libertarian tends to favor tax cuts, government spending cuts, deregulation of business, no minimum wage laws, etc. On the other hand, the libertarian also tends to oppose the drug war, laws against prostitution, the military draft, laws against homosexuality, etc. So generally speaking, the libertarian is allied with right-wing conservatives on fiscal/business policy recommendations, but the libertarian is allied with left-wing liberals on civil liberties issues.
Far from being inconsistent, the libertarian finds these positions to be perfectly straightforward: The libertarian quite consistently champions individuals and their use of private property, and opposes arbitrary government interference with such use. For example, the libertarian opposes the minimum wage because (a) politicians have no right to tell two consenting adults how much one has to pay the other, and (b) free-market economics shows that minimum wage laws actually hurt poor people.
But in a quite analogous fashion, the libertarian opposes laws against prostitution because (a) politicians have no right to tell two consenting adults how much one has to pay the other (for sex–in most places the only officially allowed price is $0), and (b) free-market economics shows that the crackdown on prostitution actually leads to more venereal disease and other social problems.
To the libertarian, it is ironic to hear the Left and Right discuss the US government. Depending on the issue, the government is either an incredibly evil, bumbling, and dangerous institution, OR it is the fount of aid, mercy, and intelligence.
For example, if we’re debating the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, or Guantanamo Bay, the typical left-wing liberal will accuse the US federal government of outright war crimes, and of being like Nazi Germany. In contrast, the typical right-wing conservative will defend the honor of US troops, the competence of intelligence agencies to keep Americans safe, and the motivations of the people who ordered the invasion.
Yet when we switch to socialized health care, all of a sudden the same liberals will wax eloquently about the government’s duty and ability to help the poor, to rationally plan the entire health-care infrastructure, and to make life-and-death decisions about how much care elders will receive. In contrast, all of a sudden the same conservatives will be very suspicious about the motives of the people in DC, and will complain about socialist power grabs, comparing Obama to Hitler.
The libertarian looks at such debates and says, basically, “You’re both right.”
Robert P. Murphy has a PhD in economics from New York University. He is the author of a new textbook, Lessons for the Young Economist, which can be downloaded for free. Starting September 8, he will teach a 10-week online course on the Principles of Economics at the Mises Academy.

The Problem with School Vouchers
The Problem With School Vouchers by Robert P. Murphy
In his laudatory review of Jacob Huebert’s new primer on libertarianism, David Gordon quotes this:The independent schools would not be killed off by genuine market competition; they would be killed off by government privileges [i.e., approval by the government to receive voucher payments] to some schools — those willing to accept government control — and not others. A program that would do this cannot be called libertarian. (p. 126)
Unfortunately, a lot of “right-wingers” and even self-described libertarians think that the free-market position on government schools is to introduce vouchers. In their rhetoric, they claim that this will end the public school monopoly, return competition to the industry, give parents a choice, etc. And of course, the free-market guru Milton Friedman himself pioneered the idea, so who could doubt its libertarian bona fides?
But hold on a second. Let’s apply the rhetoric to other areas. “Hey, I think we should give real choice to American families! Everybody should get a voucher, paid for by taxpayers, to spend up to $10,000 on a new automobile. This will give poorer families a real choice, and the competition will spur car producers to offer new options in an effort to capture those voucher revenues.”
Obviously no free-market person would support such a plan; it would represent an unjust wealth redistribution among the population, and it would wreck the car industry. The government would have to continually revise its detailed regulations governing eligibility for the program, lest some shady people set up a scam whereby they would sell cardboard “automobiles” to a voucher recipient, and then split the $10,000 afterwards.
The same is true with formal schooling. If we started from an initial, free market in the “school industry”–with no mandatory attendance laws, no government funds, and no government interference with curriculum–then the voucher idea would smack of pseudo-socialism. It would horrify Tea Party people as much as ObamaCare.
Of course, the big problem is that the government ALREADY intervenes so heavily in the area of formal schooling. That’s why the voucher position seems to be a move back towards liberty.
But is it really? As Huebert notes, the widespread introduction of vouchers could very well destroy what’s left of the independent, private schools. The government would have to establish criteria for which schools were eligible for the vouchers, and which weren’t: Taxpayers would be outraged if Joe Blow set up a “school” where he just popped in DVDs all day, and collected checks from the government.
It’s true, the government currently intervenes in numerous ways with what private schools can do. But the government would have far more leverage if it could make its requirements tied to cash disbursements, as opposed to imposing blanket regulations. For example, if the government simply declared, “It is illegal to mention ‘Intelligent Design’ in the classroom,” there would be an outcry in certain areas of the country. But if the government said, “We will not give taxpayer assistance to any schools mentioning Intelligent Design,” then the opposition would not be as strong.
However, as more and more private schools succumbed to the temptation to accept voucher-funded students, the government’s stranglehold on curriculum would expand. In the beginning, there might be temporary improvements in standardized test scores and other criteria, for all the reasons that voucher proponents cite.
But another immediate impact would be a huge increase in the demand for education tax dollars. Parents who currently send their kids to private schools (or homeschool) would apply for the vouchers. Thus the government would be paying for kids in “public” schools, but also in private. Property taxes would have to go up.
In the end, when everything had settled down, the government would extract a lot more out of taxpayers than it does now. And the difference between government and private schools would have been eroded even further. The government would have effectively taken over all formal schooling.
It is understandable that parents in many areas of the country are disgusted with their government-run schools, and look to vouchers as a “free-market” solution. But this is a grave mistake. The only way to truly fix schooling is to get government out of it altogether.
Robert P. Murphy has a PhD in economics from New York University. He has a new book [.pdf] on principles of economics aimed at junior high school students, available for free download. His online course using this book begins September 8.
